A She-Wolf Came Asking for Food, and the Forester Took Pity: Two Months Later, Three Wolves Arrived in the Village

An Unexpected Visitor on a Winter Night
One winter evening, the forester Stepan heard a noise near the fence. As he stepped outside his cabin, he spotted an exhausted wolf. After a moment’s thought, he brought out some frozen meat for the creature. The forest had been unusually barren that winter, making it hard for animals to find food. The wolf’s behavior struck Stepan as odd—predators usually stay in their territory, hunting and avoiding humans unless desperate.
A Growing Bond and Village Disapproval
The wolf returned more frequently, and soon the villagers began criticizing Stepan. No one wanted a wild animal lingering near their homes. But the forester ignored their complaints, knowing that a hungry wolf in winter could pose a greater danger. He kept feeding the animal until, one day, the visits stopped. While the villagers were relieved, Stepan felt a strange emptiness—he had grown accustomed to his unusual guest.
A Surprise Return and a Heartfelt Goodbye
Two months later, Stepan heard a familiar howl outside his window. Rushing into the yard, he found the she-wolf standing with two younger pack members. The animals watched him in silence. Suddenly, Stepan understood—she must have used the meat he provided to feed her pups all winter. Now, the pack was moving on, and she had come to say farewell. He was right: from that day on, no wolves were seen near the village again.
