Director David Lowery is standing by his decision to include Lost Girls as well as Lost Boys in the latest live-action update of Disney’s Peter Pan & Wendy, despite backlash from online trolls.

Lowery believes that being a Lost Boy is a state of mind, and that diversifying classic characters is an honorable charge to lead. The film also features Yara Shahidi as Disney’s first Black Tinkerbell, who has also faced criticism from toxic online commentators. Lowery, who previously directed a more serious take on Pete’s Dragon for Disney, aims to create a safe environment for children to face darkness and fear in adventure films.
