Dr. Karen Becker, a respected veterinarian, shared this heart-wrenching update on Bobi’s demise via a Facebook post, stating that he reached the age of 31 years and 163 days before crossing the rainbow bridge.
“Is there ever enough time? I think not,” she wrote. “Despite outliving every dog in history, his 11,478 days on this planet would never be enough for those who cherished him.”
Bobi’s extraordinary longevity was officially recognized by Guinness World Records in February, securing his status as both the oldest living dog and the oldest dog ever, breaking a record that had stood since 1939 when Bluey, a 29-year-old dog, held the title.
Bobi belonged to the Rafeiro do Alentejo breed, known as a livestock guardian dog. He resided with his owner, Leonel Costa, and Leonel’s family in Leiria, Portugal.
Bobi’s survival into adulthood is a remarkable tale in itself. Leonel’s father was a hunter, and their household was filled with dogs. However, when one of the dogs, Gira, gave birth to four puppies, the decision was made to put them down due to an already surplus number of dogs in the household.
