A London-based dentist, Dr. Shaadi Manouchehri, has recently shared a simple yet effective “teeth saving hack” for coffee and tea lovers who want to protect their pearly whites from stains and decay. In her TikTok video, Dr. Manouchehri addresses the common problem faced by those who enjoy their daily cup of joe or tea.
Coffee, black tea, and red wine are all known culprits when it comes to tooth discoloration. These beverages contain high levels of tannins, which can gradually wear away the tooth enamel, making it more susceptible to staining. As a result, regular consumption of these drinks can lead to a noticeable yellowing or darkening of the teeth over time.
Many people believe that drinking coffee through a straw can help reduce the risk of staining. However, this solution becomes impractical when dealing with hot beverages like coffee or tea. Sipping on a scalding drink through a straw can be uncomfortable and potentially dangerous, leaving coffee and tea drinkers wondering what they can do to minimize the impact on their teeth.
According to Dr. Manouchehri, one of the worst things you can do for your dental health is to sip on coffee throughout the day. She explains that regardless of whether you add sugar or milk to your coffee, the constant exposure to the drink will damage your teeth in some way. Sipping on coffee over an extended period subjects your teeth to a “constant acidic attack,” which can lead to enamel erosion and increased susceptibility to stains and decay.
