In addition to drinking coffee quickly, Dr. Manouchehri also warns against brushing your teeth immediately after consuming the beverage. When you finish your coffee, your teeth are in a highly acidic state. Brushing them right away can actually worsen the situation by rubbing the acid onto your tooth enamel. This, according to the dentist, is “the worst thing you can do” for your teeth after drinking coffee.

Instead of reaching for your toothbrush, Dr. Manouchehri recommends several alternative methods to help neutralize the acidity in your mouth. One simple solution is to drink water, which can help rinse away the acidic content more quickly. Other options include chewing sugar-free gum, having a sugar-free mint, or using mouthwash. These strategies can help stimulate saliva production and neutralize the acid in your mouth, protecting your teeth from further damage.

When it comes to brushing your teeth after drinking coffee, Dr. Manouchehri advises waiting at least 60 minutes before doing so. This waiting period allows your mouth to return to its natural pH level, reducing the risk of enamel damage caused by brushing in an acidic environment. By giving your teeth some time to recover, you can maintain better oral health and minimize the long-term effects of coffee consumption.
