Sir Bob Geldof found himself at the center of controversy after repeatedly misgendering non-binary singer Sam Smith during an appearance on This Morning.
The Band Aid hero was discussing a range of topics, including the upcoming 40th anniversary of Band Aid, when he mentioned Smith’s involvement in the charity single released back in 2014. However, he referred to the singer using the pronoun ‘he’, despite Smith’s request to use ‘they/them’ pronouns.
Viewers of the popular daytime show were quick to criticize Geldof, with many expressing their disappointment that hosts Holly Willoughby and Phillip Schofield failed to correct him. Some felt that Geldof should have been better informed on the subject, given that he was speaking on national television.
During the segment, Geldof recalled working with Smith on the song and described how he had corrected the singer’s lyrics during a recording session. However, he repeatedly referred to Smith as ‘he’, even after being corrected by Willoughby.
