Lake Minnewanka, located in the eastern part of Banff National Park in Canada, is a breathtaking glacial lake that sits about 5 kilometers northeast of the charming town of Banff. Stretching for 21 kilometers and plunging to a depth of 142 meters, it is the second longest lake in the Canadian Rockies mountain parks, and boasts an array of exciting recreational activities, including picnicking, mountain biking, hiking, canoeing, scuba diving, and snowshoeing.
For thousands of years, Lake Minnewanka has played a significant role in the lives of people who have camped and hunted along its original shores. The indigenous Stoney Nakoda First Nations referred to it as Minn-waki, which means “Spirit Lake,” due to the presence of spirits that they both revered and feared.
Lake Minnewanka is the only lake in Banff National Park that allows limited use of motorized boats. Scenic boat cruises depart daily to Devil’s Gap, with an interpretive tour guide who can fill you in on the rich history and local lore of the loch and surrounding mountains. If you prefer to travel on your own, try canoeing or kayaking. Boats can be rented at the docks on Lake Minnewanka.
Another way to discover the beauty of Lake Minnewanka is by bike. A local favorite is the Minnewanka Lake Trail, which takes you along the shoreline on a narrow, undulating trail with several technical sections.
